on waiting
The Little Red-Haired Girl and I were noticing yesterday how we have been spending a lot of our time waiting recently. While I am not necessarily a “pro-active” kind of a person, I do have some standards, and when I say I will do something, I tend to do it. I think it’s one of those little things that helps the world run better.
This leads me to wonder how things run down here at all. Since moving here, I have spent exorbitant amounts of time waiting for people to do what they’ve promised. Delivering bookshelves, for example, or coming to fix the leak in my roof. Maybe if I had internet at home I wouldn’t be as irritable about being trapped there while waiting for these people to show up. Unfortunately, I’m still waiting for that to work. I think it must just be a gridlock of waiting: the Comcast technician is home waiting to get her washing machine installed, but the maytag man is at home waiting for the plumber, who is at home waiting for the electrician, but he is at home waiting to get his new dining room set delivered, but the delivery man never got the call because he’s waiting on his cell phone service to be fixed, but the cell phone company can’t fix anything because their internet is broken. I guess that I should be thankful that I have running water or electricity at all.
I hope that, someday soon, someone will step forward and break the cycle of inactivity. Then I might be able to check my email from home.
