weekend update

posted by friedApplePie in nashville; and life; and food @ 1:42 pm

I had a pretty nice weekend. Saturday night Everything Guy called to see I wanted to hang out, as he had some friends in town and people were going to go out for dinner and drinks. Since I didn’t have a car, he sent Mischief Man to come over to collect me. Mischief Man, of course, showed up on his scooter, so I got my first ride! It was already dark, the wind was cold, and I was kind of nervous, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have. It was fun though, and I think I’d do it again. It actually seems to be a better idea than buying another car when The Little Red-Haired Girl and I love farther away from campus, and Mischief Man said he’d teach me to drive it.

So hanging out with folks that night was very fun, and The Little Red-Haired Girl was kind enough to come pick me up from Everything Guy’s house after her 18 hour workday. I was hurtin’ on Sunday though, and whined and groaned a lot. We motivated anyway, and went to Radnor for a nice walk. We saw some turtles basking and a crane hunting for fish.

Then we hit Sam’s Club, the asian grocery and the regular grocery, so we now have food in the house again. Hooray! We bought 5 avocados at Sam’s and cheap cilantro at the asian grocery, so we are having avocado week. Last night we made a delicious bbq chicken salad with avocados (duh) and cilantro (duh) and corn and jicama and other good veggies. Tonight The Little Red-Haired Girl is making my favorite salmon dish and we are going to have some kind of avocado relish/salad. Yum!

Also it is important to note that our experience at the asian grocery was way better this time (maybe because it was the weekend) and we found great things like duck legs for cheap and pork short ribs. Not as good as Supermarket 88, but still better than the last time we went.

Anyway, we went to bed right after dinner. It was 8:30. Maybe we were jetlagged from the end of daylight savings, or still exhausted from our respective saturday night activities. But we also managed to sleep until 7 this morning, although I suspect The Little Red-Haired Girl would have kept sleeping had I not woken her up.

That’s it for the weekend update. Hope everyone else had a good one too!

question:

Does it make me classist/ignorant if, when calling the pizza place, I’m surprised that the guy who answers the phone is articulate and attentive?

cardinal rules of drink

posted by friedApplePie in whimsies; and nerdy things; and life @ 12:58 pm

While living together, Lady E and I developed some basic safety rules for coming home drunk:
1. No driving or operation of any other types of heavy machinery (duh)
2. No telecommunication
3. No cooking (except with microwave)
(Did I miss anything?)

Well, LG has come up with a product which will help enforce rule #2, a breathalyzer phone! I don’t know the details, but Lady E and I have been talking about the need for something like this for years. Hopefully they will come up with something similar for email, IM, and blogging clients soon.

tv ads online

I just found a nice little resource, AdvertisementAve.com, which has a nice archive of a lot of tv commercials you may remember and love. You can search by product, company, and even celebrity. Remember this one?

Vandy drag show

posted by friedApplePie in nashville; and life @ 8:48 am

Last night The Little Red-Haired Girl and I went to the 10th annual Drag show at Vanderbilt, sponsored by Vanderbilt Lambda Association. We met up wtih Mischief Man and The K Teacher there, and had a good time dancing and watching. It was an outdoor event though, and it got pretty cold so we left before it ended. The K Teacher brought up the point that she felt weird about the whole tipping thing, like if it means that drag queens need to be objectified like that to feel validated. I don’t know how I feel about it. There is an empowerment issue, but I’d imagine most performers would say that they feel empowered up there on stage, so who are we to say if it’s a good or bad thing. At the same time, what are the politics of this intersection of queer culture and women’s objectification? There’s a complicated dynamic that I don’t understand at all, I guess.

so many interesting things

posted by friedApplePie in things that i find on the internets; and life @ 4:09 pm

Well, either there are so many interesting things in life, or I’m lying to myself in a successful effort to procrastinate and waste my day away. Even though I got up before 8am this morning, the only school related work I have done was to read half a chapter. Oops.

The rest of the day was spent working on a project on Ning, which is helping people create their own social networking applications. Mine’s not quite working properly yet, but I’ll let you know when it does.

The other thing I did was to pick up this cool little WordPress plugin (sorry lj friends, you’ll have to come check out my official site to see it in action). Basically it lets me post “my status”, so that you know what I’m up to. If I were more creative I would have more interesting stuff, but I’m not. So let me know what else I should include.

Anyway, The Little Red-Haired Girl gets home in an hour, so I’d better get some work done.

freezing flies

There’s a pretty funny/interesting conversation going on over at MetaFilter about whether or not frozen flies (and other animals) can come back to life. One highlight is this set of instructions on building a model airplane. At the very least, check out that last link.

gay in the wnba

posted by friedApplePie in the queer category; and things in the "news" @ 9:19 am

Sheryl Swoopes has come out! Woah! While two others (then-active, not playing anymore) from the wnba have come out before her, Swoopes is a superstar and a spokesperson for the organization. Again, woah. I’m excited for her and I’m excited for female athletes who have to hide behind that vague, asexual jock facade. I’m also excited for the whole of women’s sports, which is so afraid of being demonized as being “what dykes do”, that it hides and disguises its lesbian participants. Of course not all female atheletes are gay, but some are. Sheryl Swoopes is, anyway. Did I mention she is also going to start promoting Olivia Cruises?
