Vandy drag show

posted by friedApplePie in nashville; and life @ 8:48 am

Last night The Little Red-Haired Girl and I went to the 10th annual Drag show at Vanderbilt, sponsored by Vanderbilt Lambda Association. We met up wtih Mischief Man and The K Teacher there, and had a good time dancing and watching. It was an outdoor event though, and it got pretty cold so we left before it ended. The K Teacher brought up the point that she felt weird about the whole tipping thing, like if it means that drag queens need to be objectified like that to feel validated. I don’t know how I feel about it. There is an empowerment issue, but I’d imagine most performers would say that they feel empowered up there on stage, so who are we to say if it’s a good or bad thing. At the same time, what are the politics of this intersection of queer culture and women’s objectification? There’s a complicated dynamic that I don’t understand at all, I guess.
