our first christmas season

posted by Jasmine in cheese sandwich @ 11:35 pm

So, The Little Red Haired Girl and I have survived our first Christmas here in Nashville. Considering how many hits I’ve gotten on this site (the friedAppleBlurbs version of the blog, not lj) from the search term “restaurants open on christmas nashville” it seems like many people were in the same boat as us this year. Unfortunately I couldn’t help anyone in their search. My fam ended up doing a makeshift korean bbq dinner here at home. Pretty successful too, if you ask me. We did two versions of beef, one where I marinated thin slices of beef in soy sauce, honey, garlic, scallions, and sesame oil, and one where I used sauce from a jar. We also made some little side dishes with tofu, mackerel, cucumber salad, bean sprouts, and edamame.

We took mom and dad around some of the sights today before going to the movies and then picking up my brother from the airport. Then we had Chinese hot pot here at home for dinner. Now I’m just sitting, watching the Hannukah candles finish burning before going to bed. The Little Red Haired girl went to bed after lighting them, since she has to work in the morning. Mom and dad are back at the hotel, and my bro is watching tv. It’s quite a production having the family in town, but nice that they made the effort to come visit us in our new home.

Interesting note: mom has gotten so used to having The Little Red Haired Girl in the family that she now slips back and forth between English and Chinese when speaking to us. The Little Red Haired Girl can’t tell what is going on half the time, but can guess according to context and the random English words that mom throws in. It’s kind of amusing. I think it’s a good sign, in a way, that mom doesn’t use her “guest” filter. Also, the word “velcro” seems to be a difficult one for mom. We had a little lesson on how to pronounce it while waiting in line for movie tickets this afternoon. heehee.

It’s been a while since I last visited this site. The job and Guild Wars are taking away most of my time (mostly GW, I have to confess.. what a game, what a game). Anyway, I’m glad you seem happy and things seem to be working out in Nashville.
A belated merry christmas and a happy new year to you both. Have a great 2006, and don’t forget your south american friend, he he… actually… come visit!
