snow!

posted by Jasmine in cheese sandwich @ 10:12 pm

My goodness, it’s actually snowing here in Nashville! Well, it’s not quite sticking like there will be inches upon inches when we get up in the morning, but there is some accumulation. You can see the flakes blowing around under street lamps, and the sky is that weird purply-pink that makes the night eerily bright and quiet. It sure does make me miss home; but I’m sure everyone back in New England doesn’t sympathize at this point in the season.

taxes: check!

posted by Jasmine in cheese sandwich @ 12:37 pm

So I just spent the last two hours doing my taxes. I usually do the work myself, but this year I figured I should just pay the $50 to let Turbo Tax do it. I have to say, it definitely took less time, and I’m less paranoid about accidentally commiting tax fraud now. And, I have a hefty refund from paying all that tuition last year, with which I am going to buy a nice present for myself (on top of going out to fancy restaurants when The Little Red Haired Girl and I go to San Fran).

The present I’m buying myself, I have decided, is going to be a video camera. Growing up I always enjoyed using my dad’s camcorder, and now in this interaction order class I’m learning so much about analyzing video that I’m obsessed with capturing stuff on video. It may be a passing phase, who knows, but I’m convinced that I want to make some home video now.

good eats

100_0635.JPG We’ve been doing a lot of cooking lately, and trying new things. I made these wontons for Chinese New Year’s, but had enough left over to freeze. Every once in a while it’s nice to have some delicious deep fried goodness after a long day. The duck sauce that we bought at the International Grocer’s is kinda bland though; we’ll have to find a new brand.

Two nights ago we discovered some trout on sale at the supermarket, so we were going to put it on the grill. Of course, it rained all yesterday and grilling was out of the question. Well, it rained HARD. So we decided to try “broiling,” which in an electric oven just means putting the food on the top shelf and turning the oven on real high. It’s actually much less scary than broiling for real, since I’ve always managed to start some kind of grease fire and set off the smoke detector. The fish turned out really delicious. I marinated it in lime juice, mango nectar, shallots, cilantro, scallions, thyme, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Yum. The Little Red Haired Girl made roasted potatoes to go along with the fish. It was a great dinner, no doubt.
