hoops!

posted by friedApplePie in whimsies; and life @ 10:37 pm

Well, it’s that time of year again. It’s certainly one of my favorite times of the year. Not that I even follow college basketball that closely. There’s something about filling out brackets and following along that really just gets my undies up in a bunch. But in a good way.

Well, I wanted to invite everyone to join my prize-less women’s pool. It’s basically too late to invite everyone to a men’s pool, and most people have one anyway. No one ever seems to care about the women, and I always end up initiating. This year I thought I’d invite the world. And by “the world” I mean all 3 of you who read this.

go to ESPN Women’s Tournament Challenge “lady madness” page. If you don’t already have an account, register. Then all you have to do is make your picks! The password is “vanderbilt”. I know, lame. I couldn’t think of anything else. See you in there!

Is it bad that this sounds delicious to me?

posted by friedApplePie in whimsies; and food @ 8:09 am

This one comes from Busy Mom: It’s a bacon cheese burger sandwiched between two halves of a Krispy Kreme donut. Sadly, not available in Nashville. Yet.

*update* An lj friend pointed me to this Maxim article. More heart-stopping insanity.

*update again* Another lj friend informs me that the Krispy Kreme burger is called a “Luther Burger”

UT and SEC Championships

posted by friedApplePie in nashville; and life @ 12:07 pm

There are a couple of posts over at Nashville is Talking about Vandy and UT losing in the SEC tournament. What I haven’t seen mentioned yet is the UT women’s team upsetting top seeded LSU to win the whole damn thing. I missed the game since I was on vacation, but I hear it was an exciting one.

we’re back!

posted by friedApplePie in life @ 11:39 am

Wow, we had such a fabulous trip, I don’t even know where to begin. I guess it will have to leak out bit by bit over the next few weeks. It will certainly be difficult to get back into routine though.

Today is my last day of spring break, and I have a ton of work to do, on top of unpacking, sorting through mail, and general we-haven’t-been-home-in-a-week type stuff. Our buddy Katie Sawicki is also playing over at Bluebird Cafe, and staying the night with us. Too bad we can’t see her play, as we’d made plans for the night before finding out she’d be here. Bummer. Hopefully she’ll be back to Nashville again soon.

Anyway, today will be grocery shopping, maybe some open houses, and definitely some homework. I hope everyone has had as nice a week as we have!

catching up

posted by friedApplePie in life @ 7:56 pm

It’s been days since I’ve posted. Things have just been crazy busy, trying to get work done for school before going to Memphis for the rugby game and preparing to fly out to San Francisco to visit my brother for spring break. All has gone as well as can be expected: I got everything I needed to done (I think), have lots of stuff printed out to read for school while I’m here, we won the rugby game (hooray), I hung out with friends on Sat and Sun night, The Little Red Haired Girl and I went to open houses on Sunday afternoon, we managed to get properly packed, Everything Guy was kind enough to come and take us to the airport Monday morning, and the airline did not lose our luggage. What more is there to say?

San Francisco has been fabulous. More on that later tonight, maybe.

my amazon order

posted by friedApplePie in nashville; and life @ 3:16 pm

So, I ordered a camera case from amazon, and went to the website today to track my package. This is what it said:

Mar 02, 2006 03:53:00 PM LEXINGTON KY US Departure Scan
Mar 02, 2006 07:10:00 PM NASHVILLE TN US Arrival Scan
Mar 02, 2006 08:41:00 PM NASHVILLE TN US Arrived at destination country

So, umm, is Nashville, TN a whole different country?
These tracking reports never make any sense to me.

dove webisodes

posted by friedApplePie in whimsies; and tv-n-stuff; and things that i find on the internets @ 11:07 am

Has anyone else seen these things? Dove’s been working pretty hard with their advertising these days, and doing a pretty good job too, I think. These little “webisodes” for the Dove Calming Night line are no exception. They consist of Brady Bunch, Munsters, and Leave it to Beaver clips with Felicity Huffman (of TransAmerica and Desperate Housewives fame) sandwiched in. Pretty entertaining. But then again, I’m a big Felicity Huffman fan (as evidenced by the fact that I actually know who she is).

candy hearts

posted by friedApplePie in life; and food @ 3:30 pm

So, I have a little tupperware full of little candy hearts in my pod here at school. Well, it used to be full of little candy hearts. Now it is only about a quarter full. I know, fascinating. Well, here is the thing. I think that I really like the initial flavor of the pink ones, but toward the end of chewing I always get this weird bitter flavor. It happens with the purple ones too. So I don’t eat them. The Little Red Haired Girl says that this does not happen to her, so of course now I think that there is something wrong with me.

I’ve always had this theory that my saliva is somehow broken anyway. In ninth grade biology class we did the “put the unsalted saltine on your tongue and it’ll start to taste sweet” experiment. If I remember correctly, it’s because there is some sort of digestive enzyme in your saliva that starts to break the starch down into sugars. Well, I never really tasted the sweetness, so now i’m positive that I lack that enzyme. Which I believe accounts for my frequent stomachaches after meals. My saliva isn’t pulling its fair share in digestion, and my stomach objects.

Now I’m convinced that my saliva must be lacking some other crucial component that helps make pink and purple candy hearts taste good. I feel cheated. I wonder if there are drops out there, like Visine, except to supplement salivary enzymes?

hilarity

posted by friedApplePie in whimsies; and tv-n-stuff @ 8:54 am

Last night I took a break from homework to watch Jeopardy on the Tivo. For some reason, when this video clip came on, I nearly fell over laughing. I replayed it over and over, and for maybe the second time in my life I laughed until I cried. I still have no idea what the clue is, because I haven’t been able to focus on the lady at all. The Little Red Haired Girl did not think it was nearly as funny as I did, so maybe you won’t either. But I wanted to share anyway.
