things I’d like to know (part 1)

posted by Jasmine in life; and whimsies @ 7:18 am
  1. Is it bad for you to eat the ice cream after it’s become gummy?
  2. Why hasn’t anyone solved the morning breath problem yet?
  3. What happens if you get a parking ticket in a rented car and you don’t pay it?
  4. How do you prevent those automatic toilets from flushing while you’re still on them?

i’m sick

posted by Jasmine in life @ 7:17 am

When we got off the plane on Monday night a feeling of total exhaustion suddenly hit me, but I thought it was just travel fatigue. Yesterday morning I woke up feeling like total crap. Sore throat, achey head and joints, wooziness. I took it easy all day, and slept for most of the afternoon. The Little Red Haired Girl was very sweet, folding the laundry, doing the dishes, and making me juice and jello when she came home from work. This morning feels a little better, but I’m going to chill out again for most of the day.

join audible

posted by Jasmine in life; and reading @ 2:03 pm

So, if you are thinking about joining Audible, feel free to mention that I referred you. friedapplepie [at] gmail [dot] com. If you don’t know it, they do audiobooks, audio magazines, speeches, podcasts, and probably other stuff I don’t know about. They have a number of different subscription plans, or you can buy a la carte. The service is pretty easy to use and reasonable in terms of usage – you can authorize 3 computers and 3 devices, you can burn to cd, and lots of mp3 players are compatible. There are also lots of chances to get free credits, which I like. I think you get a free one when you register. So try it out, and mention me, so I can try and get some free stuff too. Thanks!

free wi-fi at BDL

I am sitting at gate 27 at Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT waiting for my flight home. There seems to be free wi-fi here. Props to you, Bradley! This has been a fabulously efficient check-in and waiting period so far.

Plus, The Little Red Haired Girl and I just ate some amazing sashimi that we picked up at New Ginza on our way out of town. There is a glazed Dunkin Donut ready for dessert. Yum!

intimate strangers

posted by Jasmine in life @ 11:42 am

Tomorrow morning we are heading north to go to The Little Red Haired Girl’s college reunion. I’ve decided that I’m not a fan of my own reunions, but I will try to make the best of this one, since it’s not really my weekend. It will, at the very least, be fun to see that part of The Little Red Haired Girl’s life, since we see my college friends all the time but rarely do we see hers.

We don’t fly back home until Monday afternoon, so we are going to have a little Boston reunion with some folks, including Lady E, The Trainer, Fanclub Girl, and Fierce n’ Fiery. I’m really excited for that, and even if I spend the rest of the weekend in a corner listening to other people reminisce, it will be worth it.

photo op with the wnba

The WNBA’s defending champions, the Sacramento Monarchs, met with President Bush yesterday at the White House. It seems strange to me that those players find it an honor to meet him. It’s the kind of sexism and homophobia that he exhibits that kept professional women’s sports from thriving for so long, and even still it struggles. Many lesbian athletes remain closeted, afraid to fill the stereotype and give naysayers more reason to disparage women’s sports.

“One of the things you’ve done is you’ve set a great example for young women athletes,” Bush said. “As the father of twin daughters — who had trouble finding a backboard, I might add — sorry, girls. I love the fact that there are role models, though, for young women, that somebody can look up to and say, ‘Gosh, I want to be like her. I want to realize my dreams by being like Yolanda.”‘

“Not my daughters,” is what he’s really saying. Bleh.

audio books

posted by Jasmine in boston; and life; and nashville; and nerdy things; and reading; and things that i find on the internets @ 2:13 pm

I’m getting back into audio books. Not in a “I listen to them” way, but in a “I wish I had a long car ride every day so I could listen to them, because there are so many I’d like to listen to” way. Which is silly, because now that I’m sort of on summer break I have way more time to read with my own eyeballs. I could probably get through many more books that way. For some reason though, I’ve been spending more time checking out the audiobooks at Audible and what’s available at Boston Public Library (where I still have a library card, shh – don’t tell) than actually trying to read. The Nashville Public Library also loans out audiobooks for download, but I haven’t had a chance to check out their collection yet, since I don’t have a library card.

At any rate, if you have an mp3 player, a cd burner/player, or even find occasion to listen to audiobooks while sitting at your computer, I highly recommend checking out what your local public library offers. It’s free, and sometimes the reader does voices for the characters, which is always fun.

miscellaneous

posted by Jasmine in life @ 7:51 am

I haven’t written in a while, and not for any good reason. I’ve had a fair amount of time on my hands, but have been wasting it playing Pirates! on the computer most of my waking hours. The Little Red Haired Girl has been understanding though, letting me while the time away these past few days. I think it helps that I have been getting up early to make her little bento lunches to bring to work. Anyway, here are some things brewing around here:

Summer job I think I need one, but I am hesitant to get one. I’m enjoying this time at home doing nothing way too much. I do have some research to do at school, but it’s not a ton.

Car insurance We finally got our shit together and registered our car in Tennessee on Monday. Then we transferred our insurance over. Jeeze, it’s like hlaf the cost. Why didn’t we just do it nine months ago? Typical.

Dentist I need to go. There are things wrong on the right side of my mouth. I have to figure out how to pay for it though. This is one of those things where, like the car registration and insurance, if I just get it over with I’ll be so much happier. I just have to do it.

High School Reunion My tenth is this weekend. Being unemployed and in Nashville, I won’t get to go. There are parts of me that are really sad, especially since some friends have been doing their best to convince me it’s worth it. However, there are parts of me that are relieved to have an excuse not to be there. I never really enjoy those types of things, and always feel crappy afterwards.

The Weather It has been quite cool around here lately. I know I’ll be wishing for this kind of weather again within a couple of weeks, but frankly, I’m cold!

Gary That’s what we accidentally named the cat that adopted us. Now we can’t think of any other name. We’re still trying to find a good home for him, but we are feeding him in the meantime. We are sad for him. He is so sweet, but he makes The Little Red Haired Girl suffocate. He’s really not cut out to be an outdoor cat. When we put food out for him the neighbor cat comes over, hisses at him, then eats it. Gary just steps aside. Now we’ve taken to sitting with him while he eats, which is ridiculous.

there’s a reason they’re cheaper

posted by Jasmine in food; and life @ 7:01 am

Finding the price of Thomas’s English Muffins exorbitant, we decided to try Kroger brand english muffins this week. Verdict: definitely not as many nooks and crannies.
