kosher wine for passover!

posted by Jasmine in drinkin'; and life; and nashville @ 3:34 pm

The Little Red Haired Girl and I found some Kosher wine for Passover today at West Meade Wine and Liquor over near the 100/70 split. It was a pretty exciting find, since we were completely unsuccessful in locating any last year and had been told that, unless we special order, we wouldn’t find any in Nashville. Anyway, the selection was more varied than we expected – about 5 different bottles of red ranging from something like $35 to $13, and a couple different bottles of white. The guy also told us that he’d order some $9.99 bottles of both red and white (something from Chile but I forget what), which is more in our price range. So we bought a couple bottles of red (a cab from Israel and a shiraz from australia) to bring home for The Little Red Haired Girl’s mom’s seder, and we will go back next week for the cheap bottles for our own seder. Score!

wii at best buy right now

posted by Jasmine in gaming; and nashville; and nerdy things @ 2:57 pm

As of about 10 minutes ago, there were something like 20 Nintendo Wiis left at the new Best Buy over in West Nashville on Charlotte. They started the day with 100, and there are still about 20 left, so you have a good chance of scoring if you jump on it soon.

dogsitting

posted by Jasmine in life; and our animals @ 8:51 am

This weekend we had Rudy, a 44lb mutt of some kind stay over while her mom was out of town. Rudy is about the same age and size as Oliver, although much more muscular. They had a blast. They chased each other around the yard, sniffed together, ate grass together, sunbathed, and wrestled. Inside they played tug, Rudy dragging Oliver around the hardwoods. Whenever we came home or walked around the house they would both jump up and follow us around, tails wagging. All of a sudden there was just so much energy in the house.

It’s so quiet now that Rudy has gone back home. I kind of miss her. I see how nice it would be to find a brother or sister for Oliver. But I also know our house and budget are both way to small for two energetic dogs. Maybe someday soon though. Some pictures from the weekend are at Oliver’s blog.

my crevice of shame

posted by Jasmine in life @ 9:32 am

I have a Crevice of Shame. It’s dark, dirty, and dusty, and has not been properly attended to in months. The dog won’t even go there. I’m talking about the foot-wide space between our bed and the wall. I’ve taken to throwing my clothes in there when getting undressed. For a while I was doing ok with the hook on the back of my closet door. Pants that have been worn and shouldn’t go back on their hangers but are not ready for the hamper yet go there. Everything else should go in the hamper, except hoodie sweatshirts which might also get the hook. But sometimes it seems to be too much for me to handle. I don’t know why. Then everything just goes in The Crevice. Right now it’s so filled with dirty clothes and old magazines that I have to get out of bed on The Little Red Haired Girl’s side. Someone really needs to take care of that shit.

sushi night

Yesterday Everything Guy and I decided to try and make some sushi. I’ve done it a couple of times before, but never very well. I’d watched a lot of sushi chefs do it, and knew it’d be hard. But I wanted to try. So I read some blogs about making sushi rice, bought some bamboo mats, and other items, and hoped for the best. The first two times turned out edible but not entirely satisfactory results. Last night we did a pretty good job. Things weren’t always perfect – the rice wasn’t quite right; it was hard to get good proportions; some of our rolls ended up a little lopsided. For his first time and my third with no official help though, we were pretty pleased. We used different combinations of unagi, imitation crab, avocado, cukes, and tempura shrimp. We all agreed that the best roll was the one where we just threw everything in. In the end it took us about 2 hours to make 10 rolls, but it was fun and totally satisfying. Next time I think we’ll try more ingredients and learn more about making proper sushi rice.

pot roast weather

posted by Jasmine in food; and life @ 11:58 am

When we went to the grocery store last weekend we found chuck roast on sale, so we figured we’d take the new crock pot that The Little Red Haired Girl bought me for a spin. Well, I’m going to make this delicious pot roast this afternoon, which is very exciting. Except it’s a gorgeous day, all sunny and clear and crisp like early spring. Not pot roast weather. Not that I’m complaining about the meal or the day, I feel lucky to have either.
