at home in boston

sashimi entree at new ginza The Little Red Haired Girl and I arrived in Boston right on time Thursday afternoon. The whole trip went essentially without a hitch, which is a nice change from my usual bad flying karma. There was a moment after we got off the plane when our checked bag was missing, but we found it stashed around a corner. Phew. We took the T out of the airport after getting a Charlie Card from a staff guy. The Charlie Card is shadily 30 cents cheaper than the Charlie Ticket, for no apparent reason. Lady E tipped us off on that.

cherrystone clams at new ginzaWe spent the afternoon looking for a jacket for my wedding outfit at Downtown Crossing. The sad news is that the original Filene’s Basement is closing. Lucky for us we got to shop there one last time, and managed to find two nice jackets for me to wear at some point in my life. The highlight of the day was our trip out to Watertown to hit our favorite sushi place, New Ginza. The place has not changed much, although there are new decorations in the main room. At least two of the servers that we remember from 2 years ago still work there, and the sushi is delicious as always. We had the agedashi tofu, sashimi entree, an extra order of cherrystone clams, and a roll with eel, tuna, cucumber, and avo. Freaking delicious. Fully satisfied, we headed out to Jamaica Plain to see the old bar, Midway Cafe. It was packed when we got ther at 9:15. Clearly Ange is doing a helluva job over there. Being too old to party, The Little Red Haired Girl and I went home around 11:30 to find Lady E home from school and already in bed. After some quick chatting and planning for the next day, we ended the day happy and glad that our visit had only just begun.

Friday is Fanclub Girl’s wedding! Which means The Little Red Haired Girl and I are heading home to Boston. We gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy our friends, the food, the public transportation, and the gay-friendliness. We’ve already got about 9 restaurants where we want to have at least a bite during our 4.5 days there. We also have plans with people that we haven’t seen in a long time, which is good. Others are out of town, but it’s a mixed blessing, since 4.5 days is not very many. Lucky we can kill many birds with just the wedding. Anyway, I am freaking excited. Lots to do today before we’re off, but it’s all worth it.

seafood watch

posted by friedApplePie in food @ 1:59 pm

Ever since joining our csa (Bugtussle Farm) last year, The Little Red Haired Girl and I have started becoming more aware of what we eat. We have always been very aware of our food in the sense that we like it a lot. But a combination of interactions with the farm folks and a lot of talking with Mrs. Superhero has made us think more about where our food is coming from and how our habits are impacting the earth. It doesn’t mean we’re changing our habits too much yet, but trying to be more aware about it seems like a good start.

Yesterday I did something that I have been consciously refusing to do ever since I’d heard of it. I did some reading about what kinds of seafood are good choices. Having grown up in New England, seafood is one of the last things I’m willing to give up no matter how good the cause. Well, the good news seems to be that I can still enjoy a lot of fish and shellfish in good conscience. Clams and mussels are fine, as are trout, mackerel, wild alaskan salmon, and striped bass. Even a few kinds of tuna are condoned. So as long as Harris Teeter is honest about where its fishkies are coming from, I think I’ll do ok.

Is there somewhere around town that I can get a savory croissant, like spinach and cheese or something like it?

I really enjoy being a lady of leisure. The whole graduate student thing is good and dandy, but lady of leisure, man. It’s the bee’s knees.

rachel ray: “mmmm”

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and food @ 10:47 am

This made me smile out loud this morning, so I figured I’d better share it. I oscillate from loving Rachel Ray to finding her perkiness infuriating, but on average I’m a fan. This video is basically just 90 seconds of Rachel Ray enjoying whatever it is she’s tasting. Funny.

getting my podcast novel on

7th son banner

I recently picked up the second book of J. C. Hutchins’s podcast novel, 7th Son: Deceit. I listened to the first book last summer while getting ready to move into the new house, but didn’t have time to get into the second book when it came out in the fall. This summer I’ve been reluctant to start it, because I have so many podcasts to listen to as it is I’m almost always behind. Well, with the third book in the trilogy being released now, I decided it’s time to get going. Hutchins is a great voice actor and the books are totally fun, suspenseful, and even thought-provoking. Basically the story is about 7 guys who discover that they were cloned from the same guy. That same guy, John Alpha, has already managed to kill the president and is implementing some maniacal plan that will result in who-knows-what. The 7 men share the same childhood memories, because at a certain age John Alpha’s memories were recorded and then uploaded into the minds of the clones. After that they followed separate paths, each becoming an expert in a different field. After the assassination of the president the 7 clones are brought back together to help stop John Alpha.

At any rate, I’m glad I’ve started listening again, but woe to the other stuff I’ve got to get done until it’s over.
