seafood watch

posted by Jasmine in food @ 1:59 pm

Ever since joining our csa (Bugtussle Farm) last year, The Little Red Haired Girl and I have started becoming more aware of what we eat. We have always been very aware of our food in the sense that we like it a lot. But a combination of interactions with the farm folks and a lot of talking with Mrs. Superhero has made us think more about where our food is coming from and how our habits are impacting the earth. It doesn’t mean we’re changing our habits too much yet, but trying to be more aware about it seems like a good start.

Yesterday I did something that I have been consciously refusing to do ever since I’d heard of it. I did some reading about what kinds of seafood are good choices. Having grown up in New England, seafood is one of the last things I’m willing to give up no matter how good the cause. Well, the good news seems to be that I can still enjoy a lot of fish and shellfish in good conscience. Clams and mussels are fine, as are trout, mackerel, wild alaskan salmon, and striped bass. Even a few kinds of tuna are condoned. So as long as Harris Teeter is honest about where its fishkies are coming from, I think I’ll do ok.
