there’s no such thing as square crackers

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and life @ 10:02 am

HA. I just saw the goldfish commercial where they’re telling scary stories about flat and square crackers. Fastforwarding through ads with tivo definitely deprives me of some of the funnier things in life. Sometimes.

Tivo ToGo and Tivo Back

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and nerdy things @ 3:49 pm

I’ve just spent the last couple of days trying to figure out how to make Tivo ToGo work for me. Thanks to Zatz Not Funny…, I can now archive some of my shows onto dvd without having to sell out for the “official” Tivo burning software. I also learned how to send video files from my PC to the Tivo by converting to mpeg2 with VLC. Suddenly the small size of my Tivo hard drive no longer makes me feel quite so inadequate. Hooray!

Now if only we had a better tv…

Project Runway 2: Social Scene

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff @ 8:10 pm

The Little Red Haired Girl’s new favorite show is Project Runway. She’s already a Bravo whore, but this show has pretty much sealed the deal. I like to watch it with her, but I’m not sure why. I have pretty much zero taste in anything, but I like to give my opinion a lot. Maybe that is why. Anyway, we are watching the most recent episode on tivo right now, and all i can say is: I hate Santino sooooo much. His heart is 7 sizes too small. I like Chloe, Daniel, and Nick. The Little Red Haired Girl likes Chloe and Nick. Oh, now she just said she likes Daniel too, after I said it. Oh, and she thinks that Santino will win. I hate his fashion sense, but that is because I conservative. She thinks he is the most talented. If he wins, I may lose all faith in justice.

ps. Nicky is WAY cuter than Paris. As The Little Red Haired Girl put it, “she looks less like a chicken”.

movie trailers

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and things that i find on the internets @ 4:41 pm

So, people have been making their own movie trailers by taking scenes from movies and putting their own music to them. I just heard them mention it on This Week in Technology’s Podcast, so I don’t know much. Here are some fun links though:

The Shining as a romantic comedy
West Side Story as a horror flick
Titanic as a horror flick

for you reading folk out there

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and things that i find on the internets @ 7:55 am

I found this on Cool Hunting: this website called What Should I Read Next?, lets you enter books that you like, and you get suggestions from other folks’ lists. I guess it’s kind of like amazon’s recommended items list, but you can pick a particular set of books from your list from which to get a recommendation, rather than just getting recommended willy nilly.

From lifehacker, LibraryThing is a site that lets you catalog your books. Some features include a comment field, a reviews field, tagging, and some social networking aspects. It’s pretty cool so far, and it’s still in beta, so I can’t wait to see what new features they come up with.

Update:
From Nashville is Talking: It’s Banned Books Week! The American Library Association sponsors this week each year to celebrate the freedom to read (and write). There’s lots of great resources on their site, including a banned books week kit that you can order, lots of information, and lists of the most challenged books/authors.

movies in the park

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and nashville; and boston @ 3:02 pm

So, looks like Nashville’s got free movies in the park in the summer, just like Boston does. They play Wednesday nights, June 6-July 13, at the Centennial Park Band Shell. In Boston they are on Friday nights at sunset, from June 19-September 2 at the Hatch Shell. Not that we ever go in Boston, and we probably won’t go in Nashville, but it’s nice to have the option, right?

Laughing Wild

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and the queer category; and boston @ 1:24 pm

Go see it! I had a “date” last night with my straight alter ego, P Galore. She took me to see Laughing Wild, put on by the Huntington Theater Company. The show is really just two monologues and a short playlet. The first two monologues are given by a woman who is slightly nuts, slightly hilarious, and somehow sympathetic. She tells us about an encounter in the tuna fish aisle at the supermarket, where a man is standing in her way, and she doesn’t say anything, but just waits behind him becoming more and more agitated until she eventually knocks him on the head in frustration. She talks about trying to get a cab and finding herself in an argument with a driver who is off duty. As she goes on, you realize that you partially agree with her, and her character is someone you can relate to. At the same time she is so helpless, lonely, and erratic that it’s a little scary. At points in her monologue I found myself laughing and depressed at the same time.

The second monologue is given by a man (the author of the play), who has a speech prepared about his new positive attitude, acquired through some sort of thinking positive seminar. Yet, try as he might, he keeps slipping away from his notes and into rants about the things he hates and fears. A highlight is when he talks about how people can possibly think that God sent AIDS to punish homos. He imagines a conversation between God and Gabriel, where God suddenly decides, in the 1970’s, to invent AIDS. It will be a blood-borne disease which will punish drug addicts, homosexuals, Haitians, and hemopheliacs. Clearly. This character is also somewhat pathetic, somewhat sympathetic, and very hilarious.

The second act, the playlet, brings the two characters together in a series of dreams that they seem to share. I won’t say more than that, but the show definitely gave me a little bit of entertainment and a lot to think about. If you get a chance, definitely see it!

Out on the Deck

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and the queer category; and nashville @ 2:09 pm

B and I will actually be in Nashville for this! We are heading down on Saturday to look at places to live. B will finally get to see, feel, smell, taste, and hear the city for herself. I will get to check out the gay scene. And hopefully a lease will be signed by Monday afternoon - wish us luck!

For the fifth year the Out on the Deck Summer Concert Series will provide live musical performances, with each concert benefiting a local non-profit. Hosted in the home, and on the large backyard deck, complete with stage, of Bev Clendenen and Anne Moorman, the concerts feature local artists with a variety of musical styles…. As in the past, the series will kick-off with a special Straight But Not Narrow edition, scheduled for June 18. This season opener will, as last year, benefit PFLAG Nashville. Details of this, and other concerts, will be announced soon.

Free music at Opry

posted by friedApplePie in tv-n-stuff; and nashville @ 4:16 pm

The Grand Ole Opry is celebrating its 80th anniversary, and putting on free concerts on Fridays (6:30pm) and Saturdays (5:30pm) throughout the summer, from June 10 - August 13. Sounds like they’ve been doing this every year for a while now, so I guess it’s not just for the anniversary. Anyway it sounds fun. Maybe B and I will catch a show when we get down there.
